Back to Success Stories - The Power of a Caring Network: Rebecca’s Story

Rebecca began her journey at the CDC as a contractor, dedicating four years before becoming a full-time employee. Through her work in policy and partnership she helped shape how the organization communicated with the public and supported STI prevention efforts across major cities and health departments. One of her proudest moments was serving as a team lead for the planning of National STI Awareness Week, where she collaborated with partner organizations and helped launch a successful, high-visibility initiative.

After being unexpectedly terminated, Rebecca faced not only financial uncertainty but also a sense of disconnection from the work and community she valued so deeply. The CDC Mutual Aid provided critical support in two key ways. First, the financial assistance came at a time when she urgently needed help covering immediate expenses. "There’s no substitute for actual financial support when you’re in need", Rebecca said. It’s given her peace of mind and the breathing room to focus on what’s next, instead of just surviving the day. Second, the experience reaffirmed that she was still part of a caring network. After her termination, she felt embraced by a community that saw her contributions and believed she still belonged. “It was a light when I thought I had no one in my corner,” she shared. Being in touch with sincere and compassionate team members reminded Rebecca that she and her work still matter.

“Help comes in many forms. Anyone’s words can encourage you. You can be impactful, even when you don’t know how." 

In uncertain times, support like this gives people the bandwidth to breathe, regroup, and remain hopeful.
