Back to Success Stories - Turning Uncertainty into Hope: David’s Story
As an ORISE Fellow at the CDC, David split his time between the Electronic Case Reporting (eCR) Team and the Public Health Agency Support Team, working to strengthen and expand the use of eCR—the automated exchange of case report information between healthcare facilities and public health agencies—systems nationwide. In this role, he took on various responsibilities, including analyzing eCR onboarding data, generating metrics and snapshots, responding to data inquiries, refining analytic code, conducting technical reviews, evaluating performance measures, partnering with multidisciplinary teams to support public health agencies on eCR priorities, and contributing to cross-cutting projects such as user acceptance testing of geospatial applications.
He was especially proud of a data project in which he identified previously unrecognized rural health clinics submitting eCR data, an achievement that expanded understanding of eCR data sources and helped advance health equity and more informed resource allocation.
When his ORISE fellowship was not renewed, David’s time at CDC came to an unexpected end. The sudden transition brought financial strain and the uncertainty of navigating a challenging job market, compounding the stress of an already difficult moment for the public health workforce.
Support from the CDC Mutual Aid fund helped David cover essential living expenses, including groceries, gas, and even food for the stray cats he has lovingly sheltered for years. The assistance eased his immediate financial burden and provided a vital emotional lift during a time of instability. “I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed to the mutual aid fund. Your generosity has been deeply touching and inspiring,” he said. “It has lifted my spirits, helping to ease my financial burden as I continue to navigate the very difficult job market.”
Despite this unprecedented attack on public health, David hopes others take away a message of optimism and hope for a brighter tomorrow.
“Presidential administrations come and go, but the work we do in public health and its impact will endure long after they are gone. Sticking together and looking out for one another is the best near-term strategy we have, and the mutual aid fund is an excellent example of public health solidarity.”
